    Space Mechanisms Lessons Learned Study. Volume 2: Literature Review

    Hundreds of satellites have been launched to date. Some have operated extremely well and others have not. In order to learn from past operating experiences, a study was conducted to determine the conditions under which space mechanisms (mechanically moving components) have previously worked or failed. The study consisted of an extensive literature review that included both government contractor reports and technical journals, communication and visits (when necessary) to the various NASA and DOD centers and their designated contractors (this included contact with project managers of current and prior NASA satellite programs as well as their industry counterparts), requests for unpublished information to NASA and industry, and a mail survey designed to acquire specific mechanism experience. The information obtained has been organized into two volumes. Volume 1 provides a summary of the lesson learned, the results of a needs analysis, responses to the mail survey, a listing of experts, a description of some available facilities, and a compilation of references.     Participatory politics, environmental journalism and newspaper campaigns

    This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published in Journalism Studies, 13(2), 210 - 225, 2012, copyright Taylor & Francis, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/1461670X.2011.646398.This article explores the extent to which approaches to participatory politics might offer a more useful alternative to understanding the role of environmental journalism in a society where the old certainties have collapsed, only to be replaced by acute uncertainty. This uncertainty not only generates acute public anxiety about risks, it has also undermined confidence in the validity of long-standing premises about the ideal role of the media in society and journalistic professionalism. The consequence, this article argues, is that aspirations of objective reportage are outdated and ill-equipped to deal with many of the new risk stories environmental journalism covers. It is not a redrawing of boundaries that is needed but a wholesale relocation of our frameworks into approaches better suited to the socio-political conditions and uncertainties of late modernity. The exploration of participatory approaches is an attempt to suggest one way this might be done

    On the compact HII galaxy UM 408 as seen by GMOS-IFU: Physical conditions

    We present Integral Field Unit GMOS-IFU data of the compact HII galaxy UM408, obtained at Gemini South telescope, in order to derive the spatial distribution of emission lines and line ratios, kinematics, plasma parameters, and oxygen abundances as well the integrated properties over an area of 3"x4".4(~750x1100 pc) located in the central part of the galaxy. The starburst in this area is resolved into two giant regions of ~375 and 250pc diameter, respectively. The ages of these two regions, estimated using Hb equivalent widths, suggest that they are coeval events of ~5Myr with stellar masses of ~10^4M_o. We have also used [OIII]/Hb and [SII]/Ha ratio maps to explore the excitation mechanisms in this galaxy. The Ha emission line was used to measure the radial velocity and velocity dispersion. We derived an integrated oxygen abundance of 12+log(O/H)=7.87 summing over all spaxels in our field of view. An average value of 12+log(O/H)=7.77 and a difference of D(O/H)=0.47 between the minimum and maximum values (7.58+-0.06-8.05+-0.04) were found, considering all data points where the oxygen abundance was measured. The spatial distribution of oxygen abundance does not show any significant gradient across the galaxy. On the other hand, the bulk of data points are lying in a region of +-2sigma dispersion (with sigma=0.1 dex) around the average value, confirming that this compact HII galaxy as other previously studied dwarf irregular galaxies is chemically homogeneous. Therefore, the new metals processed and injected by the current star formation episode are possibly not observed and reside in the hot gas phase, whereas the metals from previous events are well mixed and homogeneously distributed through the whole extent of the galaxy.Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures.     Far Ultraviolet and H-alpha Imaging of Nearby Spirals: The OB Stellar Population in the Diffuse Ionized Gas

    (Abridged) We have compared H-alpha and far ultraviolet (FUV) images of 10 nearby spirals, with the goal of understanding the contribution of field OB stars to the ionization of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in spiral galaxies. The FUV images were obtained by the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) and the H-alpha images were obtained using various ground-based telescopes. In all of the galaxies, the F_H-alpha/F_UIT flux ratio is lower in the DIG than in the HII regions. This is likely an indication that the mean spectral type for OB stars in the field is later than that in HII regions. Comparison of the N_Lyc/L_UIT ratio with models of evolving stellar populations shows that the stellar population in the DIG is consistent with either an older single burst population or a steady state model with constant star formation and an initial mass function (IMF) slope steeper than alpha=2.35. We compared the F_H\alpha/F_UIT ratio in the DIG of these galaxies with that in M33. If the mean spectral types of stars in HII regions and in the DIG are the same as in M33, and the difference in extinction between DIG and HII regions is constant among galaxies, then the analysis suggests that field stars are important sources of ionization in most galaxies, and may be the dominant source in some galaxies.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables.     Assessing the impact of nitrogen supplementation in oats across multiple growth locations and years with targeted phenotyping and high-resolution metabolite profiling approaches

    Oats (Avena sativa L.) are a healthy food, being high in dietary fibre (e.g. β-glucans), antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. Understanding the effect of variety and crop management on nutritional quality is important. The response of four oat varieties to increased nitrogen levels was investigated across multiple locations and years with respect to yield, grain quality and metabolites (assessed via GC- and LC- MS). A novel high-resolution UHPLC-PDA-MS/MS method was developed, providing improved metabolite enrichment, resolution, and identification. The combined phenotyping approach revealed that, amino acid levels were increased by nitrogen supplementation, as were total protein and nitrogen containing lipid levels, whereas health-beneficial avenanthramides were decreased. Although nitrogen addition significantly increased grain yield and β-glucan content, supporting increasing the total nitrogen levels recommended within agricultural guidelines, oat varietal choice as well as negative impacts upon health beneficial secondary metabolites and the environmental burdens associated with nitrogen fertilisation, require further consideration

    Sexual risk reduction interventions for patients attending sexual health clinics: a mixed-methods feasibility study

    Background: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to represent a major public health challenge. There is evidence that behavioural interventions to reduce risky sexual behaviours can reduce STI rates in patients attending sexual health (SH) services. However, it is not known if these interventions are effective when implemented at scale in SH settings in England. Objectives: The study had two main objectives: 1. develop and pilot a package of evidence-based sexual risk reduction interventions that can be delivered through SH services; 2. assess the feasibility of conducting a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to determine effectiveness against usual care. Design: The project was a multi-stage mixed methods study, with developmental and pilot RCT phases. Preparatory work included a systematic review; analysis of national surveillance data, and development of a triage algorithm; interviews and surveys with SH staff and patients to identify, select and adapt interventions. A pilot cluster RCT was planned for eight SH clinics; the intervention would be offered in four clinics, with qualitative and process evaluation to assess feasibility and acceptability. Four clinics acted as controls; in all clinics, participants would be consented to a 6-week follow-up STI screen. Setting: SH clinics in England. Participants: Young people (aged 16-25 years old) and men who have sex with men. Intervention: A three-part intervention package: 1. triage tool to score patients as high or low risk of STI infection using routine data; 2. a study-designed webpage with tailored sexual health information for all patients, regardless of risk; 3. a brief one-to-one session based on motivational interviewing for high risk patients. Main outcome measures: The three outcomes were: acceptability of the intervention to patients and SH providers; feasibility of delivering the interventions within existing resources; and feasibility of obtaining follow-up data on STI diagnoses (primary outcome in a full trial). Results: We identified 33 relevant trials from the systematic review, including: videos, peer support, digital, and brief one-to-one sessions. Patients and SH providers showed preferences for one-to-one and digital interventions, and providers indicated these intervention types could feasibly be implemented in their settings. There were no appropriate digital interventions that could be adapted in time for the pilot; therefore, we created a placeholder for the purposes of the pilot. The intervention package was piloted in two SH settings, rather than the planned four. Several barriers were found to intervention implementation, including a lack of trained staff time and clinic space. The intervention package was theoretically acceptable, but we observed poor engagement. We recruited patients from six clinics for the follow-up, rather than eight. The completion rate for follow-up was lower than anticipated (16% versus 46%). Limitations: Fewer clinics were included in the pilot than planned limiting the ability to make strong conclusions on RCT feasibility. Conclusion: We were unable to conclude whether a definitive RCT would be feasible due to challenges in implementation of a pilot, but have laid the groundwork for future research in the area

    A review of optimisation techniques used in the composite recycling area: State-of-the-art and steps towards a research agenda

    The increased use of carbon fibre and glass fibre reinforced polymer in industry coupled with restrictions on landfill disposal has resulted in a need to develop effective recycling technologies for composites. Currently, mechanical, thermal and chemical approaches have been use to recycle composites. This paper seeks to examine the applications of engineering optimisation techniques in the composite recycling and re-manufacturing processes and their relevant systems, providing an overview of state-of-the-art. This paper is based on a comprehensive review of literature covering nearly all the research papers in this area. These papers are analysed to identify current trends and future research directions. The composite recycling is a relatively new area, and the modelling and optimisation work for composite recycling and re-manufacturing techniques and their relevant systems is still in its infancy. Currently, the optimisation work developed in composite recycling mainly focus on the applications of design of experiments methods. These approaches have been applied to improve the quality of recyclates such as carbon fibres. Some of the soft-computing algorithms have been applied to optimise the re-manufacturing at the system level. Based on the existing research, the area of optimisation for composite recycling and re-manufacturing haven't been well explored despite the fact that many opportunities and requirements for optimisation exist. This means significant amount of modelling and optimisation work is required for the future research. More significantly, considering optimisation at the early stage of a system development is very beneficial in terms of the long term health of the composite recycling industry

    The Impact of Global Warming and Anoxia on Marine Benthic Community Dynamics: an Example from the Toarcian (Early Jurassic)

    The Pliensbachian-Toarcian (Early Jurassic) fossil record is an archive of natural data of benthic community response to global warming and marine long-term hypoxia and anoxia. In the early Toarcian mean temperatures increased by the same order of magnitude as that predicted for the near future; laminated, organic-rich, black shales were deposited in many shallow water epicontinental basins; and a biotic crisis occurred in the marine realm, with the extinction of approximately 5% of families and 26% of genera. High-resolution quantitative abundance data of benthic invertebrates were collected from the Cleveland Basin (North Yorkshire, UK), and analysed with multivariate statistical methods to detect how the fauna responded to environmental changes during the early Toarcian. Twelve biofacies were identified. Their changes through time closely resemble the pattern of faunal degradation and recovery observed in modern habitats affected by anoxia. All four successional stages of community structure recorded in modern studies are recognised in the fossil data (i.e. Stage III: climax; II: transitional; I: pioneer; 0: highly disturbed). Two main faunal turnover events occurred: (i) at the onset of anoxia, with the extinction of most benthic species and the survival of a few adapted to thrive in low-oxygen conditions (Stages I to 0) and (ii) in the recovery, when newly evolved species colonized the re-oxygenated soft sediments and the path of recovery did not retrace of pattern of ecological degradation (Stages I to II). The ordination of samples coupled with sedimentological and palaeotemperature proxy data indicate that the onset of anoxia and the extinction horizon coincide with both a rise in temperature and sea level. Our study of how faunal associations co-vary with long and short term sea level and temperature changes has implications for predicting the long-term effects of “dead zones” in modern oceans
